What is advent? If you check the dictionary, you will find that it has something to do with an arrival. In the Christian world, we celebrate the season of advent as we remember the coming of Jesus. It is a season to reflect on his arrival on earth by spending the first 25 days of December looking at the account of Christ’s birth in Scripture.
Because the season of advent begins in just a few days (Dec. 1), we wanted to share a great new resource for teens with you.
ReFocus: 25 Days of Devotions for Christmas Advent by Andy Blanks is a fantastic resource. This easy to read, daily devotional leads readers to take a fresh look at the story of Jesus’ birth. We can all fall victim to mindlessly passing over things we’ve read countless times.
ReFocus: 25 Days of Devotions for Christmas Advent by Andy Blanks is a fantastic resource. This daily devotional leads readers to take a fresh look at the story of Jesus’ birth by giving both a great picture of the circumstances surrounding Christ’s birth (as found in Scripture) and a great historical perspective to aid in understanding. The format is simple and easy to follow ending each day with insightful questions that allow for personal reflection and open the doors for the Spirit to move within.
This tool connects well with today’s culture and teen world. It is great for both middle and high school students, as well as challenging for adults who would like to participate (personal note: I loved it).
Refocus leads readers to reawaken the wonder of the Christmas story through the seemingly impossible ways God worked to bring it about and the overwhelming truth that Jesus, Immanuel, came to earth for us. It definitely grows your perspective of who God is and how he works.
If you are looking for a resource to do on your own, this one is great. It is also perfect for families to do together. Walking through a daily devotion around the breakfast table or in front of the Christmas tree would be perfect settings. Students, if you have friends at school who have maybe lost some of the wonder of what Christmas is truly about, this is a great guide for lunch table conversations throughout the month of December.
Order soon so you’ll be ready to get started by Dec. 1!
Here is a little snippet of some good stuff:
“Part of the idea of re-focusing on the Christmas story is to apply its teachings to your own life. Would you say that you are still excited about the work God is doing in and through you?” (Blanks, pg. 14)
